Rental properties make up an unusually large share (73%) of the city's housing supply, with semi-private housing associations owning three-quarters of these properties. The city government has been successful in its efforts to increase the percentage of owner-occupied dwellings. This figure has risen by 125% over the last 15 years.

Squat properties are common throughout Amsterdam. A number of these squats have become well known, such as OT301, Vrankrijk (closed down by city government), and the Binnenpret, and several are now businesses, such as health clubs and licensed restaurants.

Museums

The Rijksmuseum Amsterdam is the national museum of the Netherlands.

The Van Gogh Museum specialises in works by Vincent van Gogh.

The Stedelijk Museum specialises in modern art.

The Rembrandt House Museum specialises in works by Rembrandt van Rijn.

Shopping in Amsterdam

The main central shopping streets run in a line from near Central Station to the Leidseplein: Nieuwendijk, Kalverstraat, Heiligeweg, Leidsestraat. The emphasis is on clothes & fashion, but there are plenty of other shops. Amsterdam’s only upmarket shopping street is the P.C. Hooftstraat (near the Rijksmuseum).

Other concentrations of shops in the centre are Haarlemmerstraat / Haarlemmerdijk, Utrechtsestraat, Spiegelstraat (art/antiques), and around Nieuwmarkt. There is a concentration of Chinese shops at Zeedijk / Nieuwmarkt, but it is not a real Chinatown.

Many people plan to move to Amsterdam for a year to relax before "settling down". This plan often falls apart at the job phase. Many people will find it difficult to get a suitable job, if they do not speak Dutch. However, hostels and hotels in Amsterdam may need bar staff, night porters etc, who speak English and other languages.
