A flower market floating on a canal, the Bloemenmarkt is situated near Muntplein.
Wait…. A flower market, floating on a canal???? Yes that’s right!! This long row of “flower shops” are actually boats, and their floors have been securely connected with the street. This sight is an absolute favorite for visitors. Be sure to get there before 4pm, as this is the time most shops close their gates.
Amajor supplier of flowers to the city, the Bloemenmarkt is not only a great place for sightseeing, it’s a great place to pick up some of the Netherlands’ famous tulip bulbs to take home, as well as offering a selection of the city’s ever-present souvenir shops.
An important thing to bear in mind is that there are strict restrictions on bringing live plants to other countries. The vendors in the market know this, however, and can set you up with packages of bulbs that have the necessary paperwork for transporting them back to your home country.
